about the project

90’s Talk Show Punks is a one-page zine and a love-letter to the alternative kids of the late 90’s. The one page zine format felt right, as zines are rooted in punk tradition (not to mention cost-effective… because what’s more punk than that?). The DIY aesthetic and heavy use of thresholding further contributed to the “basement show poster” feel. The images were sourced from YouTube uploads of various talk shows while the thresholding and layouts were done in Photoshop and InDesign, respectively.

inspiration & process

I was raised on trashy daytime TV. There were always fear-mongering episodes on talk shows about people who looked “weird” or “different” and they were always titled something wildly long like “Help! my teenage daughter is dressing like a circus freak.” Maybe they had an adverse affect on me, but I grew to idolize these freaks. I screen-grabbed about 30 images from YouTube and curated the selection to 6.
